Hazard perception clips changes for 2013

In current driving theory test UK, the hazard perception test part contains real life video clips. DSA have filmed these clips from the vehicle and captured various hazards along the route. DSA thinks that this type of video clips has limitations and not all types of hazards get covered in real shooting.

So by the end of year 2013, the driving standard agency (DSA) has planned to introduce the newly developed hazards perception clips as the second part of the Theory test. They have confirmed that they are in the process of developing new and innovative clips as per the previous clips. DSA hopes to bring something new which will help all the road user as well as motorist. The new clips would be computer generated graphics and not the real shooting.

Why DSA is revising the hazard perception test clips?

In Theory test current hazards clips were introduced in November 2002 and were created by filming developing hazards. These clips were created according to the special modified car for the variety of the traffic and road situation. DSA has set the aim of introducing a quality hazard for vulnerable road users. DSA said that the previous hazard perception clips are still appropriate but the pictures of that clips are not apparent and defined. Due to the advance technology they want to make changes in the hazards clips. Learner driver become aware of the vehicles, surroundings and style are used in the clips seemed little outdated.

Driving Standard Agency explains, that clips in early were the samples but now the clips will be computer generated and could come in use by end of the year 2013. They want to introduce these clips for the safety of vulnerable road user such as cyclist, motorist and pedestrian, etc.

Tips before you start a long journey

A long journey must always be planned in advance to reduce the risk of drowsiness at the wheel and is more capable of saving time, stress and money. Planned journey is always safe and secured.

Tips for your journey:

•  Plan your journey in advance so that you should not face any problem in future.

•  Before beginning a long drive, always get enough sleep and eat something before you go.

•  Always take 15 minute break every two hours of driving. Always sleep in advance before driving for long journey.

•  Lock all of your valuables (especially items that are clearly gifts) in the trunk or glove compartment and stow all luggage in the trunk. For more ideas, see Nine Ways to Keep Your Car Safe on the Road.

•  Familiarize yourself with local traffic laws, which vary from state to state and especially overseas. Is it legal to make a right turn at a red light? What are the rules on yielding to pedestrians? For more on international car travel, see Renting a Car Abroad.

•  Before setting off on a long car trip, be sure your vehicle is in prime condition -- that tires are properly inflated, all fluids are at their proper levels and you have a full tank of gas. (For particularly long road trips, you may want to have your mechanic do a more thorough check.)

•  Consider becoming a member of AAA or signing up for your car insurer's roadside assistance program. You won't regret it when your car breaks down on a lonely back road.

•  Keep costs down by conserving gas as you drive. Minimize sudden starts and stops, empty your car of all unnecessary weight, and slow down -- it takes much less fuel to drive 55 miles an hour than it does to drive 70. For more ideas, see Save Gas and Money.

•  Don't wait until your gas gauge is sitting on E to refuel. On an unfamiliar road, you never know when the next gas station will appear. As soon as you hit a quarter of a tank, start looking for a place to fill up.

Emergency stations -emergency stations are located at regular gap and have fire extinguishers and emergency phones to the tunnel control room.

Tunnel lighting: Tunnel lighting is always there to improve the visibility at the ingress, inside the tunnel and egress. If the main tunnel light fails to work properly then emergency station provides continuous lighting that operates to give lights in an emergency.

Ventilation system: In the occurrence of fire ventilation system will push smoke out of the tunnel in a single direction (if you need to walk to an emergency exit during a fire, you should face the air flow)

Emergency exits: Road tunnels are clearly marked with signs, lights and have fire-smoke proof doors. If your vehicle catches fire leave the vehicle immediately and follow the route marked by emergency lights to an emergency exit.

Traffic cameras: If any emergency call is made from a section of the tunnel the control room operator monitor's automatically shows images from the camera in that section.

How to overcome your driving fear?

There are many people who get scared about driving on their own. They get nervous when they are at the steering wheel. Driving phobia is very common in new drivers.

Best medication to overcome the fear is positive thinking - believing in you, in your skills.

When we think only about negative things happening around us we have to face one or other phobias in our life.

Let’s consider driving as the part of our life and it is one of the everyday needs.

How can you keep your nerves at a suitable level?

Get comfortable with the vehicle: Sit in the driver's seat and learn about the vehicle. Find all of the basic controls, such as the windshield wiper function, the lights, seatbelts, blinker, and pedals.

If you have an aroma you really like, try spraying it the vehicle with it. This provides comfort.

Adjust your seat, seatbelt, and mirrors: Remember to adjust the seat, seat belts, and mirror. The mirrors should be adjusted every time you enter the vehicle, beginning with the rearview mirror. Tilt the mirror so you can see clearly out the back windshield, and make sure your night-vision function is off. Both side mirrors should be turned so that you can see your car on the inside of the mirror, and anything behind or beside you should be on the outside of the mirror.

Pretend you're driving: Make believe that you are driving without any companion with you. You have the ability to drive in the road without help. This will help you to overcome with fears. Make sure you know all the basic controls, switches, location where you have to travel.

Practice difficult driving manoeuvres -

If you are a learner driver then you should be confident enough to go for reverse and parallel parking, turns and roundabout, and driving manoeuvres etc. You can also learn Driving theory test practice question for your driving test.

Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your driving practical test. While preparing for practical test, you should be well aware of The Highway Code and traffic rules and regulations.Learner must not also forget the knowledge gained in above 14 categories of theory test.

The main objective of driving practical test is to judge whether you are a responsible driver on the road.
Hence as a learner driver you must keep in mind – your goal is not just learning to drive, but also is to become responsible driver.
This can happen only when you actually understand the theory behind the test and use the acquired knowledge while you are is on wheels.

All the best for your driving tests.

Things you know while preparing driving test

Learning to drive is one of the incredibly significant milestones for a learner growing up to become a responsible driver. A learner drivers needs to learn to take up decisions and responsibilities on their own. Getting driving theory test knowledge without skills and driving skills without knowledge of rules and regulations both are dangerous.

You must know the theory behind the driving as well as you must practice enough for full professional driving license.DSA driving exams are conducted for testing the same.

Theory test knowledge is must before you actually sit on the wheels. Practical test judges your readiness for the road.

Driving Standard Agency has said that when you mug up like a parrot is of no use but when you understand the concept is good for you.

Theory test consists of multiple choices question and hazard perception test.

You can prepare your theory test with the help of mock test. This mock theory test consists of randomly chosen questions from the mock theory test of (car and motorcycle) questions.

Learner drivers should know that Driving Standard Agency has made the changes in the theory test, keeping in mind that the real understanding is actually much better than just mugging up the official questions. The change is the test conducted by Driving Standards Agency would be based on the official exam questions, but would not contain the exact same questions from the practice material.

You should be aware of road signs, Highway codes, observation, maneuvers, speed limits, hazards on the road etc. There are many things to keep in mind while driving. If you could remember these things then you could become a responsible driver.

Whenever learner has to prepare for the driving practical test he is either nervous or stressed about his driving test. But we all know nervousness is not the way to solve the problem.

Nervousness can lead to the failure but practice can make the man perfect.

Whenever you start learning to drive you should always listen to your driving instructor. You need to keep your self very cool and calm.

Professional driving instructor is the one who can teach proper driving lessons and help you to come out from problems. Preparation could be easy if you prepare online theory driving  and link the understanding with the practical lesions being taught by professional instructor.

In the DSA practical test, you will then be examined on two reversing exercises

The reversing exercises will be chosen from:

  • reversing around a corner,
  • turning in the road
  • reverse parking,
You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise. Always try to practice this reversing exercise with the driving instructor.
  • Reverse parking - Drive alongside a parked car and reverse back within the space of two car lengths without hitting the kerb and whilst observing for other road users.
  • Turn in the road - Turn the car around using forward and reverse gears without hitting the kerb and whilst observing for other road users.
  • Reverse to the left - Reverse in to a side road to your left, keep close to the kerb and observe for other road users.
  • Bay parking - Reverse in to a car park bay, whilst observing for other road users.
  • Emergency stop - Stop the car as in an emergency, without skidding.
Driving carefully can lead you to drive safely and avoid misfortune in future. Which lead the healthy and safe life. When you learn the complete driving, you can drive independently on the road without any help. Independent driving means a safe and responsible driving.

Motorbike riding in the rural areas

Riding a motorbike is a great fun loving activity.

Safety matters first as we all say "Is better to lose one minute in life...than to lose life in a minute".

As per recent survey -

Motorcyclists and moped users are more than two and a half times more likely to be killed on a rural road than on an urban road. Driving in the rural areas is more challenging than driving in urban areas as we have less convenience in such areas. A responsible driver should be aware of driving rules and regulation. This can be possible if you prepare your driving theory test and practical test with latest DSA theory test revision question and theory test CD/DVD's available online.

You could face number of obstacles and challenges while driving in rural areas. Below are the few of those -

  • Blind curves
  • Damaged road surface
  • Slow moving vehicles
  • No guard rails or shoulder
  • Sharp curves
  • Lack of accurate maps or signs
  • Farm animals on the roads
  • Single track roads
Before riding a motorbike test people should pass the motorcycle driving theory test and then go for motorbike practical test. You get theory knowledge about the roads, signs, markings etc when you prepare for the motorcycle theory test and you get practical experience when you actually start taking riding/driving lessons.

Even when after you get a full driving license, there is no end to learning, as driving/riding is such a skill that if you learn from experiences you become better driver day by day.

Driving condition in the rural areas differ from those in the city areas as those areas are unmarked, hidden because of crops, bushes, or trees. There are many open highways many hazards and driving challenges. Pay attention to road signs, look for animals sign, falling road, changing Speed limits etc.

Motor riders should keep their motorbikes in the good condition. You should ensure that your bike is clean and in good working order. Check the basics - tyres, fuel, oil and lights - replace anything that isn't in tip top shape. Scrub the lights, windshield, reflectors and any shiny surfaces. If you wear glasses, considering custom made eyewear to make your night vision as clear as possible.

Overtaking on a rural road is incredibly dangerous and should be avoided unless you are certain about the road views.

The country roads are usually narrow, so make sure to give other motorists space on the road. In any circumstances allow yourself every opportunity to successfully stop suddenly.

Dim your headlights when you come in contact with other motorists, full lights particularly at night time can be blinding, remember to wear the helmet while riding motorbike.

General safety tips for motor riders:
  • Always wear helmet
  • Keep your distance
  • Check for bikes when turning
  • Check for motorcycles at junctions
  • Park safely
  • Check for bikes when changing lanes
  • Wear bright or florescent gear during the day and reflective gear at night
  • Bikers must wear a protective jacket, gloves, boots and trousers
Follow these safety measures and enjoy your ride!

Learning to drive with great skills

Many youth are eager to learn driving lessons at the age of seventeen. The teenagers are very excited at the minimum age but they forget that driving is not a game. Among youth, driving is a fun loving game and if they played well they become a champion.

To learn driving, one has to be well prepared mentally as well as physically. People feel very anxious at the initial stage of driving. Driving can be easy if you understand the learning method and then you go for driving.

People could learn driving with the help of driving instructor, elder family member, etc. It will be good if people go for driving instructor. Driving instructor will teach the basic driving lesson.

Before you start learning to drive a car, moped or motorcycle you must apply for a provisional driving license. First provisional driving license for car and motorcycle can be applied by using the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency's (DVLA) online services. After getting the driving license learner driver should pass dsa theory test and then book your driving practical test comprising of multiple choices question and hazard perception clips.

If learner is preparing for driving theory test, it is vital to prepare:

1. Latest driving theory test official questions
2. The Highway Code
3. Practice hazard perception test clips.

People can prepare their theory test through website online access using internet. Various books are available in the market such as theory test book, Highway Code books, and practical test book; also CD/DVD's containing hazard perception clips.

Theory test questions are not tough, only few questions bit difficult to remember. Make sure you have practiced enough and taken mock theory driving test, especially speed limits, stopping distances, road signs questions. Take advice from your driving instructor regarding when to sit your test. Try to book your driving test well in advance so that you should get convenient time slot to prepare for your test.

You can book theory test, practical test online using direct.gov. uk.

Theory test is computer based so no need to be expert at using computers. Before test just make sure how the touch screen works. You should think positive before your test. Read each question carefully and note how many answers are required. When you think you've finished check through all your answers again.

Hazard perception test - Make sure you have understood the concept, scoring mechanism of hazard perception test. Most candidates fail only because they do not know what needs to be done to achieve maximum score.

After passing the driving theory test learner should apply for the practical driving test. Practical test is made of different elements such as eyesight test, vehicle safety questions, a test of driving ability, a test of specific maneuvers etc.

Tips for driving practical test

Driving a car has always been a good experience for those who want more flexibility while traveling.

Driving is a fun as well a great responsibility and any kind of short cuts can lead to accidents.

Any person that requires a driving license has to pass Driving test and then go for Driving practical test in order to be able to drive on the roads.

Driving practical test can be a truly unforgettable experience. Almost all the drivers on the road remember their day of driving practical test.

Even confident learners get nervous while appearing for the Practical test. Many people can pass their driving theory test but get nervous while appearing for the practical driving test

To pass a driving practical test, drivers must be aware of basic things such as Highway Code, traffic rules, manoeuvres etc.

During the dsa practical test you should be aware of these general but important *practical driving test tips

1. When ever you get in the car remember to wear your seat belt.
2. Whenever you are riding a motorbike remember to wear helmet. Learner rider must wear the helmet while taking the motorbike practical test.
3. Always remember to look both ways, AND behind you when pulling out. TURN your head to look behind you - don't just rely on the mirror.
4. Always adjust your mirrors before starting the car.
5. Always apply break smoothly. Remember to come to a complete stop at stop signs.
6. Always follow the traffic signals, Highway codes.
7. Maintain a reasonable distance space between the vehicles surrounding you.
8. Take your time parallel parking.
9. Make sure you know how to park on a hill.
10. You may need to know how to work the following parking brakes, headlights, wipers, heater, parking lights, high beams, and other Instruments. In other words, just familiarize yourself with the entire interior of the vehicle.
11. Check your tyres regularly and keep at recommended pressure.
12. Never exceed speed limits, accelerate gently.
13. During the test, always follow the examiner's instructions. If you don't understand something, ASK. It's better to ask than to mess up because you're not clear about something.
Apart from these things people should be aware of the *practical test* will include an eyesight check (if you fail this, your test will not continue). The eyesight test requires you to read a number plate that is a certain distance away. After the eyesight test you will be asked two vehicle safety check questions. You will then be examined on your general driving and on two reversing exercises. The reversing exercises will be chosen from:

- Reversing around a corner
- Turning in the road
- Reverse parking
You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.

You will then start your car practical driving test which will include some specific driving Manoeuvres

Throughout the practical test examiner will be looking for the overall safe standard of driving, You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the practical test*. *And the time given to the learner drivers is about 40 minutes.

If you prepare well for DSA theory test, you are generally aware about rules regulations of the road, all you need is a professional advice and more practice.

How to cut down Driving test waiting lists

DSA Current practical driving test is currently extended to the point whereby learners have to wait month for practical test date.

Both theory test and Driving practical test can be booked online. At the moment, although candidates need to wait for 1month or so for practical test, but DSA theory test date waiting list is not so long.

The Driving Standard Agency is set to examine a new approach by different way of delivering the driving test. Number of motorists getting on the road to acquire their driving license, but only few test centres and instructors are around to conduct the government estimation. Driving Standards Agency has been working hard to find a solution to the problem of the ever-growing list of driving hopefuls.

The precise process of examination will remain the same but as a result driving exam can be taken as revise. According to the Driving Standard Agency all the local authority buildings, hotels and even leisure centres will potentially get the chance of becoming a test centre. With the new approach trial is been taken to the eight location. Feedback from the initial test is good and the scheme being extended and rolling out across five new locations.

But what does it mean for a driver ready to take to the open road with all but a piece of paper stopping them from doing so?

By considering the candidates benefit in local services from the improving driving test benefits Driving Standard Agency is planning to get more flexible scheme, so that the candidate should not wait for the test for long time.

With the review of the candidate's advantage from the improvements in local services the Driving Standard Agency has come up with new innovative scheme where the candidates need not have to wait for a month- long. Official DSA examiners will still conduct the dsa practical test. And "on-test" drivers will continue to receive the same standard of assessment. They will also get the license privilege if and when they pass.

Road Safety Minister, Mike Penning, said: "We have to be more flexible and innovative in delivering driving tests to make sure that we are offering people the best service possible wherever they live and I am delighted that these first trials have proved successful.

"We are now extending the trial so that more candidates will be able to benefit from a service that is convenient as well as being cost effective."

So, the dreaded driving test waiting lists that can halt a learner's bid for freedom after a successful training period look to potentially be a thing of the past under the new initiative - great news for fresh-faced motorists looking to gain their freedom.

Why child seat belt is important while driving

Most people love to drive a car and go out with their family. One of the simplest and the convenient techniques to protect yourself is to wear a seatbelt. It is well proven that seat belt save the lives.

While preparing for driving theory test and hazard perception test part of DSA theory test, the road safety majors are covered in the preparation topics.

The importance of adult seat belts, child seat belt is covered in the syllabus of theory test and Hazard perception, but most learner drivers forget this in later stages of driving.

It is very important to wear seat belts while driving. Also you must make sure the passengers are also wearing them. It is a responsibility of a driver to make sure the passengers are safe while driving.

Seat belts are designed in such a way that it gives a high level of protection in the event of a crash. They are designed to adjust automatically to fit the user, to be convenient and easy to use. Wearing a seat belt is not only important to the drivers but it is also important to the child sitting in front.

If your child uses a child's car seat, the seat must be fitted properly in your vehicle. One should always check a child car seat is fitted correctly and get your child comfortable. Child seat belt is designed in such a way that child is been fitted properly and sits comfortably. If the child is less then age12 then they have to make use of child seat belt. Child seat belt is designed according to the child's weight. If they are at the age of 12 or more then they can use adult seat belt.

Car seats are designed according to the children's weight. Label on the seat shows the weight range is suitable for. The weight ranges are divided into the following groups:

Group 0 and Group 0+ rear-facing baby seats:

Group 0 and Group 0+ -
These are rear-facing baby seats suitable for babies up to 13 kilogram's. Baby seats have their own (integral) straps. The adult seat belt or ISOFix system is used to hold the baby seat in place.

Group I -
These are forward or rearward-facing baby seats for children between 9 and 18 kilogram's. These seats also have their own straps or impact shield and are held in place by the adult seat belt or ISOFix system. In a seat with a front airbag, make sure a forward-facing child seat is as far back from the airbag as possible.

Group II -
These are forward-facing child car seats (booster seats) for children from 15 to 25 kilogram's and may have backs or side wings. Child car seats don't have their own straps - your child is held in using the adult seatbelt and the seat is held in place by the adult seatbelt and/or the ISOFix system. Make sure you position a forward-facing booster seat as far back as possible from a frontal airbag.

Group III -
These are booster cushions for children above 22 kilogram's. Some seats cover more than one group and can be used as your child grows. Check on the seat label. When your child reaches 22 kilogram's, they can use a booster cushion. These may not have backs but raise your child in the car's seat so they can use the adult seat belt.

While driving people should be aware of potential hazards on the road and wearing the seat belts can reduce the injuries of that person as it stops that person to come out of his seat and hit other interiors of the car which is also called second impact.

Despite of risk of serious injuries, and facts that seat belts can be effective in saving the life of people sitting in the vehicle, many people still neglect the use of seat belts while driving.

Importance of helmet while riding

There are people who ride a bike for enjoyment but there are some who are in need to reach from one place to another as cheaply and as fast as possible. People always forget their safety before riding bike. Riders should try to avoid careless riding and wear helmet for safety. Wearing a helmet is one of the important equipments used for riding. According to the Driving Standard Agency DSA helmet is compulsory for the motorbike riders and learner riders must pass their dsa theory test, dsa hazard perception and Practical driving test to ride motorbike on the road.

Wearing a helmet not only helps riders to protect from the accidents but it protects your head from the injuries. When you're working or riding a motorbike it's very imperative to have the correct safety gear. A motorbike helmet is the most vital item of safety equipment, but it will only provide enough protection if it's the right type and fits properly.

People should be assured that the helmet must have undergone anti-scratch anti-fog healing. Always make sure that eye shades should not touch the outer shell of the helmet because there are the chances of scratches. Always make sure that you have passed motorbike theory test and then move for motorbike practical test. This will help you to understand the theory as well as practical test both. While riding riders should make sure that they are aware of hazards on the road.

A motorbike helmet needs to fit properly. Make sure it surrounds the whole of your head. Make sure that the helmet straps are adjustable go tight enough to fit around your face. It's also a good idea to try on the same brand of helmet one size larger and one size smaller to make doubly sure you really have the optimal fit. Some helmets offer extra comfort by means of air vents, which can be easily slid open or closed to allow more air to circulate while riding.

People who are new learner rider must go for the lighter model rather than the heavier one. Maintaining the perfect balance also counts a lot. After you get the suitable helmet for your child or yourself, always be very careful in storing them at the proper site. Do not place them in a high or rough spots. The risk of scratching or reflection for a costly bike helmet should also be avoided. The helmet should not be placed on the load or mirrors that are located on the sides. If this kind of thing is repeated more often then the interior stuffing of the helmet gets damaged and thus it cannot be used over again and again.

Wearing a correct type of helmet will not only reduces your risk but also will be protective enough.
Take your own time to choose your helmet and enjoy your ride.

Common reasons for failing your practical driving test

Learner drivers, who want to pass their practical driving test, must prepare driving test with confidence and avoid some common mistakes that will cause failure in practical driving test.

Proper use of steering failure:
When you are driving your vehicle you must control on your vehicles steering. This category involves a lot of care of the steering wheel and the control of it. Don't cross your hands on the wheel, Allow steering wheel to spin back after a turn or drive with any hands off the wheel for any longer than they have to be.

Proper use of gears failure:
In normal driving, Gears plays a very important role to control the car. Before you move away, make sure you are in the right gear. When slowing down or coming to a stop, use the brakes to slow down the car. Remember that you should not use gears. If you are in emergency situations, you can use gears for braking. In general rule, Move into 2nd gear as soon as you move from stationary, 3rd gear at 20mph, 4th gear at 30mph, and 5th gear at 40mph.

Problems with parking manoeuvres:
One of the hardest manoeuvres is reverse parking. On the road, probably the most used manoeuvre is Reverse parking. In this manoeuvre, the purpose to test your observation, accuracy, control over vehicle and clutch while moving backwards. When reversing keep slow and giving yourself a plenty of time to reverse and observe cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles if they seen then stop your vehicle.

Drive alongside a parked car and reverse back within the space of two car lengths without hitting the kerb and whilst observing for other road users.

Incorrectly reversing around a corner:
In this manoeuvre, the purpose is to test your Control, accuracy and observation. Lack of observation and hitting the curb and is a common reason to fail your test. During the reversing, use an appropriate speed. Keep slow and giving yourself enough time to judge your distances correctly.

Failure to drive at road junctions:
If you are driving over a junction, you must slow down your vehicle and check your mirror that helps to make an emergency stop. If you want to turn, check signal to turn and your mirrors, and slow down your vehicle while turning. A common test fail with junctions is limit lines. Lack of observation and fast driving in junctions results fail in test.

Effective use of mirrors Failure:
Wrong use of mirrors is a common mistake, especially when turning and changing lane. Check your mirrors if change speed, direction change and slowing down. Between 25 to 50% of your driving time should be glancing in mirrors.

Failure to drive properly turning right:
Use the correct mirrors and indicate when turning right. It can be difficult to Judge the correct time to turn. Observe an appropriate gap in the oncoming traffic and Wait when traffic goes on. You know how long it takes for you to turn right; the aim is not to hold other people up.

Too slowly driving:
When are driving over the speed limit or drive too slowly, the examiner will fail you. Drive at the speed limit and not unnecessarily slow when the road you are driving is safe and clear. Very slow driving slow can be frustrating for other road users.

DSA theory test new exam pattern - Is it difficult or easier than before?

DSA used to publish all theory test questions and answers till December 2011. So learner drivers knew exactly what will be asked in exam. They used to memorized Driving test questions and answers unknowingly. To avoid this Driving Standard Authority made changes in the driving test pattern.

And now the theory test exam questions are not phrased exactly like revision test material. The motive behind the progress is to prevent learner from simply memorizing theory test questions and answers.

With these changes in driving theory test learner will gain a better knowledge and will be better prepared for driving on the road.

Since the new pattern came in practice theory test, many learner drivers started worrying - whether the new pattern would be difficult. We feel that the exam would be easier with the new pattern as learner driver would be more alert while preparing for the test.

Preparation with better knowledge and understanding improves road sense, and so it is very useful while actually driving/riding on the road.

We are curious to know how these changes affect the test nationwide pass-rate. Pass percentage before these changes were made live is at 63%.

Driving theory test pass rates are as follows:-

Nationwide Pass Rates:

Cars: 62.9%
Motorcycle: 55.9%
LGV: 88.4%
PCV: 87.8%

Whereas driving practical test pass rates are as follows-

Nationwide Pass Rates:

Car: 45.65%
Bike: 64.15%
LGV: 48.39%
PCV: 45.94%

The official statistics for the 2011/12 period are expected in July of this year. That statistics would show how the candidates have been affected by the new changes.

Have you appeared for your exam after Jan 23rd? We would like to know your experience. Just in case if attempted the test before 23rd Jan and made a re-attempt after 23rd Jan, how what was your experience?

Share your experiences with us; just send us an email to info@theory-test.co.uk

Foreigners without knowing English clear UK driving test

According to government documents, over 10,000 people of various nationalities have cleared driving test in Britain without having a basic knowledge of English.

According to Daily Express documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act showed that the 10,330 learner drivers passed the test with interpreters sitting in the back seat relaying instructions in their local language.

There are number of facilities provided by Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to the people who don't understand English language. Foreign drivers are not capable of reading instructions on road signs written in English. The DSA has provided special facilities for those people, who are unable to understand English. All these facilities need to be requested at the time of booking your theory test. There are theory test practice study material available that can help to clear driving test.

Ministers are also worried about the safety implications of providing driving license to number of people who do not speak English and cannot read road signs.

Transport minister Mike Penning said: "I find it incredible that Labour thought it was a good idea to let people without Basic English loose on our roads. Road safety should be our priority, not political correctness".

"Instead of spending taxpayers' money on costly translation services and interpreters we want to explore whether that money would be better spent on actually helping people to learn enough English to be able to drive safely".

Driving Standards Agency said: "We are review the level of foreign language support currently provided for drivers. Any changes to the current measures would be subject to a full public meeting".

The Driving Standards Agency website tells drivers that it is their responsibility to arrange an interpreter, who must be at least 16, and pay for the service.
The rules currently allow the theory test to be sat in 21 foreign languages. People are also permitted to attend the practical test with a translator.

If your first language is not English, or you can not read or understand written English well, you can request a voiceover in one of 21 languages(Albanian, Gujarati, Hindi, Arabic, Bengali, Punjabi, Pushto, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu, Cantonese, Dari, English, Farsi, Kashmiri, Kurdish, Mirpuri, Polish, Portuguese, Welsh). A voiceover allows you to hear the theory test instructions and questions through headphones. The questions will automatically be read out to you, you can hear the answer options by touching the text on the screen. You can hear the questions as many times as you like, you simply need to touch the text of the question onscreen again.

It is cleared from the recent survey conducted by DSA people who don't have basic knowledge of English still book theory test and pass the driving theory test in UK. There might be a possibility that DSA will allow English as a compulsory language in future.

DSA driving theory test information

Since theory tests began in 1996, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has published the questions and answers from the question banks for all categories of tests for cars, motorcycles, lorries and buses. However, DSA announced last November that it was to stop publishing the multiple choice questions and answers, with unpublished questions being used from January 2012.

After that date, the questions a candidate will be asked on test will not be exactly the same as those in their learning materials. So in short - Questions will be drawn from new 'live' theory test question banks, which will not be published.

DSA's chief executive Rosemary Thew said:
'The reason behind the move is to stop candidates from simply memorising theory test questions and answers and learning by rote. The new books contain questions and answers for revision and also explain the theory behind each question.
This approach to learning will help candidates to gain a better knowledge and understanding of driving theory which will help them respond correctly to the new, re-worded live questions used in the actual test.

The idea is that driving test candidates need to learn and understand the theory and gain the appropriate knowledge required to be a safe driver on the road and withdrawing access to the questions and answers bank will stop people from just memorizing just to pass the theory test which is very common from my experience with learner drivers. But we would like to assure you that the tests will not be harder, but will support DSA's aims to move candidates away from learning questions and answers by rote and towards their gaining better knowledge and understanding of driving and riding theory.

You would need to study these practice, non-live theory test questions for revision purposes (the Official Revision Question Banks). These questions are to test your knowledge and understanding of the source material.

New theory test changes from Jan 2012-
From this date onwards, DSA is to stop publishing the live multiple choice questions used in all theory tests. However, the DSA will continue to release publication of Theory test practice, non- live theory test questions for revision purposes (the official revision question banks.

How exactly would it affect candidates?
If you are taking your theory test before 1st Jan 2012, you will be asked the exact same questions as they are published here. But if you are taking theory test after 1st January 2012, you need to know about the changes in the UK theory test.
The questions in the exam will not be exactly same as they are published.
The DSA will not distribute the real/exam questions.
Real/live exam questions will not appear in any product - book, CD, mobile applications or on any website.
So your test would contain questions which are unpublished.

Revision questions Vs live questions -
Revision questions is the source material published by DSA
Whereas the live/exam questions are the questions based on the revision questions - which not appear in any product!

We wish you all the best for your DSA test.

Using mobile phone while driving is a growing problem

Driving a motor vehicle on public road could be challenging task. Irresponsible driving can be a dangerous activity for most of the people. Careless driving can harm road users and driver as well.

It is illegal to drive a car or ride a motorbike and make use mobile phone or similar device. It is also illegal to supervise a learner and use mobile phone. A mobile phone can distract a driver in various ways. Even a small phone ring can create an accident. With better technology, people can now use mobile phones without touching it - but nobody can resist listening and talking on the phone while driving. But please always note such distractions while driving can always turn fetal.

Since 1st of December 2003 it became an offence to use a mobile phone while driving. The fixed penalty was a £30 or up to £1,000 on conviction in court (£2,500 for drivers of goods vehicles, buses or coaches). Since 27th of February 2007 the penalty is now 3 points on your license or a minimum fine of £60. The new regulations are now applied to the drivers of motor vehicles on the road, including cars, motorcycles, goods vehicles, buses, coaches and taxis.

Research has found that telephone conversation distracts from the mental concentration and divides attention while driving. Normally it is expected that if a pedestrian starts crossing the road suddenly, a driver will try to react and stop the car. But if the driver is using a mobile phone, then there will be a risk that the driver will not be able to respond in time and ultimately create an accident

Consequences of driving with no lack of attention while driving could be fetal.

1. Drivers are less aware:
Drivers are less aware of what's happening on the road around them. They don't pay full attention towards their driving, accidents can happen.

2. Fail to maintain proper lane position:
Sometimes when drivers are busy with their phones they fail to maintain their lane position and speed.

3. Fail to see road signs:
When drivers are busy with their phones while driving forget to notice the road signs and drive in wrong lane. They can create a problem for road users.

4. React slowly and take longer to brake:
It takes longer for them to notice potential hazards and take necessary action.

5. More likely to enter unsafe gaps in traffic:
Bike riders and car drivers are sometimes don't maintain safe distance to stop their vehicles in traffic. Bike riders always try to move further from the big vehicles and forget their safety on the road.

6. Parking vehicles in no parking areas:
As the drivers are less aware about the surrounding, they park their vehicles in prohibited areas e.g. space reserved for handicapped people.

Safety measures can be taken:

1. Set up an answering Service:
Instead of answering a phone call while driving, you can use answering service so you won't miss that important call

2. Switch off:
You can switch off your mobile phone while driving. This will help you to concentrate on the road. Or you can also keep the mobile phone in silent mode so you can receive emergency calls and messages later.

3. Dial sensibly and assess the traffic:
If you want to make an important call, find a suitable and safe place to stop and use your mobile phone.

4. Avoid conversations during hazardous driving conditions.
As a driver, your first responsibility is to pay attention to the road. Let the person you are talking should know that you are driving. If necessary, reject the call in heavy traffic or hazardous weather conditions. Rain, sleet, snow and ice can be hazardous but heavy traffic can be just as dangerous.

Learner car drivers - some tips to avoid crashes with motorcyclists

Motorcyclists are 57 times more likely to be injured in serious or fatal crashes than car drivers.

Some tips to avoid crashes with motorcyclists:

Keep your distance. Driving too close can intimidate a less experienced motorcyclist.
Check for bikes when changing lanes. A motorcyclist may be in the space you want to move into, or moving into it fast. Remember your blind spot. For learner drivers its too mendatory to drive slow and turn vehicle safely. Visit here to pass online driving course .

Check for bikes when turning. Parked cars or large vehicles can obstruct your view of a motorcyclist.

Motorcyclists might pass you on either side, so double-check, whether you're turning left or right.

Check for motorcycles at junctions. Remember to look carefully for bikes, as it is often difficult to see them when they are coming out of junctions. Always look out for them before you emerge from a junction because they could be approaching faster than you think.

Park safely. Check for motorcyclists before opening a car door and ensure that your passengers do the same. When you pull away remember that motorcyclists are narrower than cars, which can make them harder to see.

Driving theory test center: Important documents required with you

DSA has been working closely with the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) so we can accept UK Identity Cards issued by IPS as an alternative means by which candidates may confirm their identity for all types of driving tests and Driver CPC periodic training.

Minimum cost of DSA driving theory test online  itself is £31.00. And on top of it, if you just don't carry required documents, you might loose your driving test fees. So why take a chance.

DSA has been working closely with the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) so we can accept UK Identity Cards issued by IPS as an alternative means by which candidates may confirm their identity for all types of driving tests and Driver CPC periodic training.

Candidates for driving tests and periodic training need to produce evidence of their entitlement to drive the relevant vehicle and prove their identity before the test or training can commence.

Candidates may currently do this by way of a driving license. Where the license does not contain a photograph a valid passport is also required.

Candidates will still need to confirm their driving entitlement by producing their driving license for driving test but, with effect from 27 April, candidates who do not have a photo card license will be able to use a valid UK ID Card issued by IPS as an alternative to their passport.

Any candidate who is unable to satisfy the examiner of their driving entitlement or identity will have their driving test cancelled and may lose their fee.

Things to note down:

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the test time shown above to allow DSA to check you in.

Must-have documents from driving test-
• A valid signed UK photocard licence
• An old style valid signed UK paper driving licence and a valid passport.

Accepted photographic ID -

Photographic identification acceptable for both driving theory and driving practical tests are as follows:
1. A valid signed UK (or Northern Ireland) photocard licence
2. An old style valid signed UK (or Northern Ireland) paper driving licence and a valid passport.

If you now have two or more tests booked that you have not yet taken, please check that there is at least 2 hours between your appointments. Failure to do so could cause you to miss a test and lose your fee. If you haven't already, you can also book appointment online.

Remember: if you do not bring your driving licence and acceptable proof of identity when you arrive for your test you will not be allowed to take it and you will lose your test fee.

Learner drivers - Few things to keep in mind while using satellite navigation systems

Satellite Navigation (satnav) systems are popular with many drivers and provide a safe option for directions for drivers in unfamiliar areas. Correctly used satnav systems have the potential to ease congestion, reduce fuel consumption and improve road safety. Listening to satnav instructions is likely to be less distracting for a driver than stopping every few minutes to check a paper map or worse, trying to use a paper map in motion.

Satellite navigation systems are perhaps one of the most futile driving aids. With their improved functions like voice commands and blue-tooth technology, these systems are making traveling fun and easy. Still, it is necessary to use them wisely while driving without putting yourself in danger.

The Think Road safety has given few useful tips on how you should keep in mind while using Satellite Navigation (satnav) systems:
  • choose a satnav system that is suitable for you.
  • the controls are simple to understand and operate;
  • you can read and understand the graphics;
  • the system includes all the information you need (e.g. height restrictions in the case of a tall vehicle);
  • the map information is current and can be updated in the future.

Driving on the road should be paid full attention on your vehicle otherwise you could be in big trouble, like collides with another vehicle or having cross the road dividers or may be others.

While using Satellite Navigation (satnav) systems you keep in mind that this is help to you for finding out the location or some specified place. It should be used very carefully or you have to travel some more distance unwanted.

Many drivers on the road do not follow the guidelines well and pay healthy money for avoiding traffic signals. On the other hand if you are well passed theory test it will be easy to you drive a vehicle on the road. So, this leads to be important factor which is known as "hazard perception test". It is passed during your theory test examination.

If you are not passed your UK Driving test then there is one great opportunity for you. There you will be more pleased to learn driving because there is confidential tradition for learner drivers.
